The Guilty Ones - A Book Review by Max

The mystery book at I just finished is The Guilty Ones by Joy Ellis. Overall I give it a 4 out of 5 stars. Throughout the book Rowan Jackman is trying to solve the case of his sister in law Sarah Jackman's suicide. While trying to solve the case he finds that someone in a nearby village died under similar circumstance.s. Rowan Jackman and a group of detectives try to find what caused this woman who had a loving caring family and a great life to kill herself. To find out what caused the two people to kill themselves they look into their past to find stuff out. While looking into their past they find out that they had been involved in a killing as a witness and after the case about the murder was over they had created a new life by changing their identity and moving to new places. After digging deeper the crew of detectives interviewed many people of the murder case that happened many years ago. Then they finally find the person who drove the victims to kill themselves and they investigate his whole life. Then the find a whole lot about that person like his name, Alistair Ashcroft and that he was autistic and stuff like that. But, after all knowing all about him and his past they still can’t catch him.

Overall the book was a pretty good with many good qualities of a mystery and many twist and turns. The down sides of this book was that it took forever to get to the point and climax of this book because each detail was over elaborated. Also the book was very hard to understand in the beginning and in some parts in the middle. In the beginning it was very hard to understand because there were a lot of characters, details, and things going on and the author didn’t describe what was going on. But without the negatives the book The Guilty Ones was a very good mystery book because there were many parts that had you wanting to read more and more. I would definitely recommend this book to someone who can read a lot and likes a good mystery.

The Westing Game - Another Book Review by Breanna

“Sixteen unlikely people are caught up in one of Samuel W. Westing’s games. None of these people know why Westing has brought fourteen relatives or friends, a “stranger, and a possible murderer to inherit his fortune. However, that doesn’t stop them from playing Westing’s last game. Even if he’s dead!”

The Westing Game, written by Ellen Raskin, is a Newbery Medal book and an enjoyable one at best. It combines murder mystery with a twist you’ll only expect from CLUE. The characters, who seem one-dimensional, become more fleshed out once the story hits the murder tone. Raskin truly creates a narrative with unexpecting turns left and right.

Unfortunately, that also brings its biggest flaw: The game itself. Although the Westing game is the main component, it brings unexpected twists out of nowhere. With no established knowledge or evidence, it brings some questions that take me out of the reading.

However, I recommend Ellen Raskin’s book with a 4.5/5 stars. Other books Raskin has written, that I also recommend, are Figgs & Phantoms and The Mysterious and Disappearance of Leon(I mean Noel).

The Westing Game - A Book Review by Anika and Miya

Our mystery book is The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin. I would definitely rate this book five stars. The book starts off with the chilling discovery of Mr. Sam Westing found dead in his own home. He had been murdered. But by who? A question running through all sixteen renters of the sunset towers. They had all been informed that each of them was a relative of Sam Westing, and that one of them could be the recipients of his will of $200,000,000. All of the renters are heirs to Mr. Westing, but only one claims to know him.

Before Mr. Westing died he left a will. In the will he left eight sets of clues to find the culprit of his murder. Each person was assigned a partner, assigned by Mr. Westing. Each pair gets a set of clues and 10,000 dollars. At first many of the clues don’t make sense to the pairs. Some examples of clues are, “Waves” or “Mountain.” Once each pair puts all their clues together it would sound like one of the names of one of the sixteen relatives. Mr. Westing said, “It’s not what you have it’s what you don’t have.” At the end of the book turtle figures out that Sam Westing is not in fact dead and he had been disguised as Sandy McSouthers and Barney Northrup and Mr. Eastman. Finally the murder was solved! Turtle confronted Mr. Westing and won the will of $200,000,000.

I would recommend this book to anyone. I think this book is really good for people who like mystery. It has a great element of suspense because the reader of the book is seeing everyone’s clues and can figure them out before the character. I also think that this book has a very interesting storyline. I love how there are some characters that don’t seem to fit in with the heirs but end up being important to the story. Overall I think that this book is great for people of all ages to read and many would find it very interesting.
