Poet to Poet by Kate T

As you probably know April is National Poetry Month and 6th grade is doing an activity this month; it is called Poet to Poet. Earlier this week the 6th grade class watched professional poets recite one of their favorite poems. Now the 6th grade classes are writing a letter to the poets, and we will also begin writing some poetry of our own inspired by the poems we have heard. I am choosing to write a letter and poem inspired by Edward Hirsch, he wrote the poem cotton candy. Other students I interviewed also are enjoying poetry month. “ I really enjoy the activity that we are doing in class. I especially like that we can have a chance to communicate with the poet.” says one student. Another student says that “ I think that this is a cool activity to do in poetry month. This activity helps us get better and understand poetry like never before. Writing to poets about their poems will really help us get deeper into poetry.” Along with loving the poetry month, students are writing letters and poems to all different types of poets including Edward Hirsch, and Juan Herrera, etc. I think it is great that we are able to have this opportunity, I know many other schools might not have been able to participate in this event, but I am glad that our school is participating.

Some of our student letters ready to mailed.

  1. Great job on your blog post Kate! You brought a better understanding of this projects to students, and people who never have done this, and to people whom had knowledge in this. I wrote my letter to Mr. Naomi Shihab Nye, who wrote the poem, “How do I know when a poem is finished?” I asked her many questions regarding her poem and also about writing and improving it. I think you should incorporate some of that information is you do a similar blog in the future. Will the poet write back? That is one question that I have been curious about during and after the assignment is/was used. Overall, I feel that you have made a great blog, which I have question about. I hope you can get back to me soon.

  2. Yes, this was a great post. It was detailed and easy to understand. I already read some of Naomi Shihab Nye's poems before this project and I still enjoy them. It would the coolest thing is she replies!
Also, Amol, isn't Naomi Shihab Nye a Mrs.? Not a Mr.? Just saying!

  3. I agree with the students interviewed, this was a really neat thing to do and maybe hearing back from them will help us with our own poetry. I really hope that these great poets can get a chance to respond back to some of our letters. Great job on this blog post Kate!

  4. I feel like this post was well done. It went into detail about the event, and you even provided an example of one poet you could've sent a letter to. Good job!
I also sent a letter to Naomi Shihab Nye concerning her poem "How do You Know When a Poem is Finished." In my letter, I discussed some of the metaphorical meanings I thought were in the words, and asked questions concerning her as a writer. The event overall was pretty memorable, and this blog post would easily explain the event to anyone who didn't participate.
