Aqueduct Challenge by Axel, Ryan, and Arib

In Expressions recently, there has been a well known challenge among the sixth graders: The Aqueduct Challenge! This was a scrumptious challenge that Ms. Meindl asked us to do in honor of our now current history unit, Ancient Rome! In Ancient Rome, the great Roman architects and artists created an artificial river to give and produce water to their city called an aqueduct! So in honor of
this unit of Rome, we did the Aqueduct Challenge!
What the Aqueduct Challenge was just four different large groups in each of the Expressions periods (4, 5, and 7). Groups were trying to see who could build the best aqueduct that could carry the most water the fastest through a mini aqueduct that we built by ourselves with only five materials: buckets, bricks, tape, water, and our own hands! Every finalist group in their period that won everyone else will be competing against each other from every period! It was a very fun, difficult, and hands on project that we all enjoyed very much and it took lots of cool creativeness!

“It was fun and challenging at the same time”, said Hudson. For period 4, Axel’s team won, only because Christian spilled a little water (but no excuses!). For period 5, we are not sure which group won. On period 7, Ainna's group won. “It was unfair because we beat them fair and square, but then Ms. Meindl picked the winner from last time,” said Sai. Even if you lost, it was still very fun and exciting to build a Roman structure and make water move all by itself!

We’ll see you in the finals!

  1. The Aqueduct Challenge was very fun and competitive. You got to see the fastest aqueducts and the fanciest aqueducts compete to win. Awesome blog!

  2. I enjoyed the Aqueduct Challenge! It was really fun and awesome! Even though my group didn't win, I got to see the ons better than ours and saw what was wrong with ours. It was fun to see the Semi Finals in each of our periods and fun to make!

  3. I also enjoyed the Aqueduct Challenge. In my opinion, it brought a great challenge for the sixth graders to enjoy and gain a little knowledge towards the art of architecture and integration. I personally learned a lot from this challenge, such as hydraulic transportation and some of the challenges it takes to construct an Aqueduct. In Period 5, Kate’s group won the semi-final. One the first day, my group and Shane’s group had tied, but Kate’s group had achieved overall victory despite being disqualified the first day. As we know, the Romans also were known for their excellent construction of arches and aqueducts. I feel that they had to develop many steps of planning to initiate the proper design for usage. Water does get lost along in the way of travel, and you can learn that from a tube, but imagine how much water could be lost by an artificial river! Overall, I would like to say that Arib, Ryan, and Axel did an amazing job on this blog, and it is nice to know about some other students input, and the results.

  4. I agree with you Amol, the aqueduct challenge was very fun. This was a very fun way to act like the romans and to see what they had to go though in order to bring water to their city. It's nice to hear what other people had to say about there opinions.

  5. The aqueduct challenge, which we as students challenged to do in school was so fun. It was very fun to build the aqueducts, and I felt that it was even more fun to watch overall on how the whole class built their aqueducts with fanciness and speed of the water flow. I felt that everybody did their best. the aqueduct challenge was a challenge to have the fastest flow of water, with a hill at least twelve inches high. The group I was in had a picture above in the blog (The second Picture). Everyone tried their best, as the group next to us even used colored blue water to track the travel of water through the tubes. In our group, we really had good teamwork. For example, wile someone was getting the bricks, someone would be working on the tube attachments, or while someones working on the taping, others would work on the beautification. We also improved our first aqueduct to the second time, because our group tied for first place we had a final later on. Our group together, improved our design, as we changed the hills, bricks, tube, water supplier box, and supports which helped us win the challenge, and which also gave the water travel speed, with beautification surroundings too. Overall, this aqueduct challenge was fun, great, and exciting.

  9. The Aqueduct Challenge was very enjoyable and it was also extremely competitive. It would be cool if we are able to an event similar to this in 7th grade.
